Chris | Tuesday 22nd September, 2015

Whilst football tournaments will always have the biggest global team sport audience draw, an impressive 10 million viewers tuned into the Rugby World Cup 2015 opening ceremony and match in the UK.

At the same time, it became evident that the rugby tournament was taking social media by storm. Some of the statistics provide some insight into how the RWC played out over social platforms:

  • The hashtag #RWC2015 ‘trended’ globally throughout the day, with the official Rugby World Cup channel receiving a huge 181 million impressions
  • The official Rugby World Cup Facebook page grew to over three million followers
  • On YouTube, the official RWC 2015 video was watched almost two million times

So, only a week into it, the Rugby World Cup 2015 is already shaping up to be one of the most spoken about sports events on the planet, with social media activity this weekend on track to surpass the total volume achieved across the entire duration of the New Zealand RWC in 2011.

We are already seeing fans old and new taking to Twitter to share content and opinions about it, as mentioned above, #RWC2015 trended all day, reaching 15 million instances on Facebook, 300,000 on Instagram and achieving 181 million page impressions with content delivered in four languages.

In addition to all of that social activity, the Official RWC2015 App, available via the iTunes store, has been downloaded by 1.5 million fans, delivering geo-targeted, experience-rich content to its audience.

Once again we are witnessing the power of social media marketing and the ability the networks give everybody living in the free world to have their say and join the conversation online.

So if you want to keep up with the World Cup, get onto Twitter or Facebook for instantaneous comment and content.
